PNG Independence
Papua New Guinea (PNG) gained independence from Australia on September 16, 1975. After World War II, PNG became a trust territory administered by Australia. Over time, growing nationalist sentiments and calls for self-determination led to a political movement for independence. A Constitutional Convention was held in the early 1970s, which ultimately drafted the constitution for an independent state. PNG became a sovereign nation, with a parliamentary democracy and a rich cultural diversity, comprising numerous ethnic groups and languages. Independence marked a significant step in PNG's journey toward self-governance and national identity.
