Pneumococcal Infections
Pneumococcal infections are caused by a type of bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. These infections can affect the lungs (pneumonia), the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis), and the bloodstream (bacteremia). They commonly occur in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include cough, fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. Vaccines are available to help prevent these infections. Prompt medical treatment with antibiotics is often effective, but some strains can be resistant, making prevention particularly important.
