Plutonium Recycle
Plutonium recycle involves reusing plutonium from spent nuclear fuel to create new fuel for reactors. After nuclear fuel has performed its energy-generating role, it contains leftover materials, including plutonium. Instead of discarding it as waste, this plutonium can be chemically processed and formed into new fuel, often called mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. Using recycled plutonium reduces the need to mine new uranium, conserves resources, and minimizes nuclear waste. This process enhances nuclear fuel efficiency and supports non-proliferation by controlling nuclear materials within a closed fuel cycle.
