Pluralistic ignorance
Pluralistic ignorance occurs when individuals mistakenly believe their personal feelings or opinions are unique, while in reality, many others share the same view. This misperception leads people to conform to a perceived majority stance, even if it differs from their true beliefs. Consequently, behavioral norms are maintained not because they are genuinely supported by most, but because everyone mistakenly thinks they are. This phenomenon can hinder honest communication and perpetuate misunderstandings within groups, as people act according to false assumptions about collective attitudes.
