Plexiform lesions
Plexiform lesions are complex blood vessel formations associated with advanced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). They involve abnormal growth of small arteries in the lungs, creating tangled clusters of proliferating cells and new vessels. These lesions contribute to narrowing and blockage of the arteries, increasing blood pressure in the lungs. Their presence indicates severe disease and plays a significant role in the progression of PAH by compromising blood flow and leading to symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue. Understanding these lesions helps in diagnosing and assessing the severity of pulmonary hypertension.
