Pleural Fluid

Pleural fluid is a small amount of liquid located between the two layers of tissue that surround the lungs, called the pleura. Its main role is to reduce friction as the lungs expand and contract during breathing. Normally, only a thin layer of fluid is present, but sometimes this fluid can increase due to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. An abnormal buildup, called pleural effusion, may cause symptoms like chest discomfort or difficulty breathing, and can require medical evaluation to determine its cause and appropriate treatment.
