Pleural Diseases

Pleural diseases involve conditions affecting the pleura, the thin membrane lining the chest cavity and covering the lungs. In thoracic oncology, these diseases often relate to lung cancer or metastases, causing fluid buildup (pleural effusion) or thickening of the pleura (pleural thickening or mesothelioma). Symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, and coughing. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests and possibly procedures to analyze pleural fluid. Treatment options depend on the type and cause of the disease and may include medication, drainage of excess fluid, or surgery.
