Playa Girón
Playa Girón, also known as the Bay of Pigs, is a beach located on the southern coast of Cuba. It is historically significant for the failed U.S.-backed invasion in April 1961, when Cuban exiles attempted to overthrow Fidel Castro's government. The invasion aimed to spark a wider uprising against communism in Cuba but ended disastrously for the invaders. The event heightened Cold War tensions, leading to a stronger alignment between Cuba and the Soviet Union. Today, Playa Girón is also known for its natural beauty and attracts tourists for its diving and clear waters.
