The platysma is a thin, broad muscle located in the front of your neck. It stretches from your chest and shoulder area up to your jaw and the corners of your mouth. Its main functions include helping you express emotions like surprise or tension by pulling down the corners of your mouth and tightening the skin of your neck. It also assists in opening the jaw slightly. The platysma is important for facial expressions and protecting underlying structures in your neck.
