Plato (specific gravity of beer)
Plato is a measurement used in brewing to indicate the concentration of dissolved solids, mainly sugars, in wort or beer. It reflects the beer's potential alcohol content and sweetness. One degree Plato equals 1 gram of extract (mainly sugars) in 100 grams of liquid. For example, a 12° Plato beer has about 12 grams of extract per 100 grams of liquid. Brewers use this measurement to monitor fermentation progress and ensure consistency. It helps predict the final alcohol level and flavor profile, making it a valuable tool in beer production.
