Platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa
Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa is a receptor found on the surface of platelets, which are small blood cells involved in clotting. This receptor plays a crucial role in blood clot formation by binding to fibrinogen, a protein that links platelets together to form a stable clot. When blood vessels are injured, Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa becomes activated, enabling platelets to stick to each other quickly and stop bleeding. Because of its essential role in clot formation, certain medications target this receptor to prevent abnormal clotting, such as in heart attacks or strokes.
