Platelet Crossmatch

Platelet crossmatching is a laboratory test performed before a platelet transfusion. It helps ensure compatibility between the donor's platelets and the recipient's blood. Just like blood types, platelets have specific markers, and mismatches can lead to complications. During the crossmatch, a small sample of the donor’s platelets is mixed with the recipient's serum to check for any reaction. If no reaction occurs, it indicates a good match, increasing the chances of a successful transfusion. This process is especially important for patients who may need multiple transfusions or those with conditions like immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
