plasmin

Plasmin is an enzyme in the body that helps break down blood clots. When a blood clot forms to stop bleeding, plasmin works to dissolve it once healing is complete, maintaining proper blood flow. It does this by breaking down a protein called fibrin, which is the main component of clots. This process, known as fibrinolysis, is essential for preventing excessive clotting that could block blood vessels. In medicine, plasmin or drugs that activate it are used to treat conditions like strokes or heart attacks caused by dangerous clots.
