Plasma exchange therapy

Plasma exchange therapy, also called plasmapheresis, is a procedure that removes and replaces a person’s blood plasma—the liquid part of blood that carries cells and waste. During the process, blood is drawn from the patient, their plasma is separated and discarded, and then the remaining blood components are mixed with a replacement fluid and returned to the body. This therapy helps remove harmful substances, such as autoantibodies or toxins, from the blood, and is used to treat certain autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, and other conditions where removing these substances can improve health.
