Plains Indian history
Plains Indian history involves the diverse Native tribes of the Great Plains in North America, such as the Sioux, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Blackfoot. These tribes were traditionally nomadic, relying on buffalo for food, clothing, and tools, and they lived in tipi dwellings. European colonization, the expansion of the U.S. government, and forced relocations, like the reservation system, greatly disrupted their way of life. Conflicts such as the Battle of Little Bighorn and the Wounded Knee Massacre marked resistance and tragic losses. Today, Plains tribes continue to preserve their cultural heritage, language, and sovereignty despite historical hardships.
