Plague Doctor
A Plague Doctor was a medical professional during the outbreaks of the bubonic plague, particularly in the 14th to 17th centuries. They are often depicted wearing a distinctive outfit that included a long coat, gloves, boots, and a bird-like mask with glass eyes. This mask was believed to protect them from miasma, or "bad air," thought to spread disease. Plague doctors treated sick individuals, often using methods based on the medical beliefs of their time, which included bloodletting and herbal remedies. Their role and appearance remain symbolic of the struggles against epidemics in history.
