PhyB is a protein in plants that detects light, specifically red and far-red wavelengths. It functions as a photoreceptor, helping plants interpret their environment to regulate growth, flower timing, and seed development. When exposed to red light, PhyB changes its shape, activating processes that promote growth or flowering. In darkness or far-red light, it reverts to its inactive form. This light-sensitive switch allows plants to adapt to their surroundings, optimizing survival and reproduction by responding appropriately to day length and light quality.
