Phrygia (region)
Phrygia was an ancient region in west-central Anatolia (modern Turkey), known for its rich history and cultural significance. It was inhabited by the Phrygians, an Indo-European people, from around 1200 BCE. The area was famed for its distinctive art, mythology—including the legendary King Midas—and early urban centers like Gordium. Phrygia played a role in various civilizations, from the Hittites to the Persian Empire, and later became part of the Roman and Byzantine worlds. Today, its historical sites and legends continue to influence cultural and archaeological studies of ancient Anatolia.
