Phragmites (Common Reed)

Phragmites, commonly known as common reed, is a tall, perennial grass that grows in wetlands, marshes, and along shorelines. It can reach up to 15 feet and has feathery flower heads. While it provides habitat and erosion control, certain non-native strains can form dense stands that outcompete native plants, reduce biodiversity, and alter wetland ecosystems. Phragmites spreads rapidly through underground rhizomes and seed dispersal, making it a challenging invasive species in some areas. Managing its growth helps maintain healthy wetland habitats and supports native plant and animal species.
