Phragmites australis (Common Reed)
Phragmites australis, commonly known as the Common Reed, is a tall, perennial wetland grass found worldwide in marshes, riverbanks, and coastal areas. It can grow up to 15 feet tall, with feathery flower heads that turn from green to tan. Native to many regions, it plays a vital role in providing habitat, stabilizing soil, and filtering water. However, in some areas, especially where it’s invasive, it can outcompete native plants, reduce biodiversity, and alter wetland ecosystems. Proper management balances its ecological benefits with the need to prevent it from dominating disturbed or sensitive habitats.
