Photonic propulsion systems
Photonic propulsion systems use focused light, typically lasers or sunlight, to propel spacecraft. Instead of relying on fuel, these systems generate a high-intensity beam that pushes on a lightweight, reflective surface attached to the spacecraft. The energy from the photons creates a small but continuous thrust, allowing the craft to accelerate over time. This method can enable faster travel across vast distances in space, as it requires no onboard fuel and can achieve high speeds by continuously pushing with light. Photonic propulsion is a promising technology for efficient, long-duration space exploration missions.
