Photofrin

Photofrin is a medication used in a cancer treatment called photodynamic therapy. It is a special dye that is injected into the bloodstream and absorbed by cancer cells. When treated areas are exposed to a specific type of light, Photofrin becomes activated, producing a form of oxygen that kills the cancer cells. This targeted approach minimizes damage to healthy tissue and is mainly used for certain types of cancers such as esophageal or skin cancers. Photofrin’s effectiveness relies on its ability to selectively accumulate in cancer cells and the subsequent application of light therapy.
