Phocomelia

Phocomelia is a rare congenital condition where individuals are born with severely shortened or absent limbs, with hands or feet often located close to the torso, resembling flippers or fins. This occurs due to abnormal development of the limbs during early pregnancy, frequently linked to genetic factors or exposure to certain medications like thalidomide. People with phocomelia may have normal upper bodies but challenge in limb mobility and function. Despite physical differences, many lead active lives with the help of adaptive devices, therapies, and support, emphasizing that their condition does not define their abilities or potential.
