Philipides (Pheidippides)
Pheidippides was an ancient Greek messenger best known for running from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens, approximately 26 miles away, to deliver news of the Greek victory over Persia. According to legend, he completed the run, announced "Nike" (victory), and then collapsed and died from exhaustion. This story inspired the modern marathon race. Historically, the actual events may be more complex or different, but Pheidippides symbolizes dedication, endurance, and the importance of communication in warfare. His story highlights the athleticism and valor celebrated in Greek history.
