Philhellenic movement
The Philhellenic movement was a 19th-century European trend that supported Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire. Enthusiasts admired Greece’s ancient culture, democracy, and contributions to Western civilization. Many in Europe and America actively advocated for Greece’s cause, providing political, financial, and military assistance during Greece’s war of independence (1821–1832). This movement was driven by respect for classical Greece’s heritage and a desire to promote what was perceived as its democratic ideals. Overall, Philhellenism fostered international solidarity with Greece and helped shape the modern Greek state.
