Phenotypes of NAFLD
Phenotypes of NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) refer to the different characteristics or patterns the disease can present. Some individuals have simple fat buildup in the liver with no inflammation or damage, called simple steatosis. Others may develop inflammation and liver cell injury, known as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to scarring (fibrosis) or cirrhosis. Factors influencing these phenotypes include genetics, insulin resistance, obesity, and lifestyle. Recognizing these patterns helps doctors determine the risk of progression and tailor appropriate treatment strategies.
