Peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii)
Peyote cactus (Lophophora williamsii) is a small, spineless, slow-growing cactus native to Mexico and southwestern Texas. It is well known for its psychoactive properties due to the presence of mescaline, a naturally occurring hallucinogen. Traditionally, Indigenous peoples have used peyote in spiritual and religious rituals for centuries. The plant has thick, bluish-green pads and produces small, pink flowers. While valued for its cultural significance, peyote is regulated in many countries because of its potent effects. It plays a central role in certain spiritual ceremonies but should be approached with understanding of its legal and psychological implications.
