Petrović-Njegoš dynasty
The Petrović-Njegoš dynasty was a prominent ruling family in Montenegro, beginning in the late 17th century. They led efforts to maintain Montenegrin independence, uniting tribes and resisting Ottoman rule. The dynasty included notable leaders like Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, a poet and philosopher, and Prince (later King) Nikola I, who modernized the country and expanded its territory. The family played a significant role in shaping Montenegro’s national identity until the monarchy was abolished in 1918, after which the dynasty's influence waned. Their legacy remains important in Montenegrin history and culture.
