Peter's tomb

Peter’s tomb is traditionally believed to be located beneath the Vatican in a small underground chapel called the Necropolis or Grotto of Saint Peter. According to Catholic tradition, Peter, one of Jesus’s apostles and the first pope, was martyred in Rome around 64 AD and buried there. Archaeological excavations have uncovered ancient Christian burial sites that are thought to be Peter’s original grave. In the 20th century, a small shrine was built over a burial site identified as Peter’s, making it a significant religious and historical site. However, pinpointing his exact remains remains a subject of scholarly discussion.
