PET scan protocols involve preparing the patient and administering a small amount of radioactive material called a tracer, usually via injection. This tracer emits signals that a specialized camera detects, creating detailed images of metabolic activity within the body. Patients may be asked to fast for several hours before the scan to improve accuracy. After the injection, there’s typically a waiting period to allow the tracer to distribute properly. During the scanning, the patient remains still to ensure clear images. These protocols help identify cancer, heart problems, or brain disorders by highlighting areas of abnormal activity.
