Perry v. Brown
Perry v. Brown was a court case challenging California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. The plaintiffs argued that Proposition 8 violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process. The case was initially heard in 2010, and in 2012, a federal trial court struck down Proposition 8, ruling it unconstitutional. The case was then appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. This case was part of the broader legal battle for marriage equality in the U.S., ultimately contributing to the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision that same-sex marriage is a constitutional right nationwide.
