Perlmutter collaboration

The Perlmutter collaboration involves scientists using a telescope located in California, called the Supernova Cosmology Project, to study distant exploding stars known as supernovae. Their goal is to understand how the universe is expanding by measuring the brightness and distance of these supernovae. Their discoveries around 1998 provided strong evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, leading to the concept of dark energy—a mysterious force driving this acceleration. This work fundamentally changed our understanding of cosmology, revealing that most of the universe's energy content is in the form of dark energy.
