Peripheral blood stem cells are special cells found in the bloodstream that have the ability to develop into all types of blood cells, such as red cells, white cells, and platelets. Usually, these stem cells reside in the bone marrow, but they can be collected from the bloodstream after a process called mobilization, where medication encourages them to move from the marrow into the blood. This collection is often used for stem cell transplants to treat certain blood disorders and cancers, helping rebuild healthy blood cell production in patients.
