Perioperative aspirin resistance
Perioperative aspirin resistance refers to a situation where a person’s blood does not respond as expected to aspirin around the time of surgery. Normally, aspirin helps prevent blood clots by stopping platelets from sticking together. However, in some individuals, aspirin’s effect is weaker or lost during this period, increasing the risk of clot formation. Factors like genetic differences, other medications, or health conditions can contribute. Recognizing this resistance is important to manage the patient's risk of clot-related complications effectively during and after surgery.
