Pericarditis
Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium, the thin, fluid-filled sac surrounding the heart. This condition can cause chest pain, which may worsen with deep breaths, coughing, or lying down, and sometimes leads to a buildup of excess fluid around the heart. Causes include infections, autoimmune diseases, certain medications, or injury. Symptoms often include sharp chest pain and general discomfort. Most cases are manageable with medication to reduce inflammation and pain, but severe cases may require additional treatment. Prompt diagnosis and care are important to prevent complications such as cardiac tamponade, where pressure on the heart impairs its function.
