pericardiocentesis
Pericardiocentesis is a medical procedure used to remove excess fluid from the space surrounding the heart, called the pericardial sac. This fluid buildup can put pressure on the heart, affecting its ability to pump effectively. During the procedure, a thin needle and sometimes a tube are carefully inserted through the skin into the pericardial space under imaging guidance, like ultrasound. The fluid is then drained, relieving pressure on the heart. This procedure provides immediate relief and helps diagnose the cause of the fluid accumulation, which can be critical in emergency or serious heart conditions.
