Pericardial Fluid

Pericardial fluid is a small amount of liquid located in the pericardial sac, a protective double-layered membrane surrounding the heart. Its main role is to reduce friction between the heart and the sac as the heart beats, allowing smooth movement. Normally, this fluid volume is minimal, around 15-50 milliliters. Sometimes, excess fluid can accumulate due to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions, which may lead to discomfort or complications. Doctors analyze this fluid to diagnose and determine the cause of heart-related issues.
