Peri-implant Mucositis

Peri-implant mucositis is a reversible inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding a dental implant, similar to gum inflammation around natural teeth. It is caused by plaque buildup and bacterial infection, leading to redness, swelling, and bleeding when brushing or probing. It does not affect the bone supporting the implant at this stage. Proper oral hygiene and professional cleaning can usually reverse peri-implant mucositis. If left untreated, it can progress to peri-implantitis, which involves bone loss and may threaten the stability of the implant. Regular dental check-ups are essential for early detection and management.
