Performing Rights Organization (PRO)
A Performing Rights Organization (PRO) is a company that helps music creators—such as songwriters and composers—get paid when their music is played publicly. When songs are broadcast on radio, TV, streamed online, or performed live, PROs track these uses and ensure the creators receive royalties. They also license the rights for venues, broadcasters, and producers to legally perform or broadcast music. Examples include BMI, ASCAP, and SOCAN. Essentially, PROs serve as intermediaries that connect music creators with those using their music and ensure artists are fairly compensated for their work’s public exposure.
