Perforin
Perforin is a protein produced by immune cells called cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells. Its main role is to help these cells destroy infected or cancerous cells. Perforin works by creating pores in the target cell’s membrane, similar to tiny holes. This allows other molecules, such as granzymes, to enter the target cell and trigger its death. Essentially, perforin acts like a molecular tool that punctures harmful cells, aiding the immune system in protecting the body from disease.
