People's Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI)
The People's Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI), also known as MEK, is an Iranian political-militant organization that opposes the Iranian government. Founded in the 1960s, it initially aimed to overthrow Iran’s monarchy and later the Islamic Republic. The group combines Islamist and socialist ideals and has engaged in violence, including armed conflict and terrorism, primarily targeting the Iranian regime. It was once banned in Iran but gained support from some Western governments, especially during the 1980s, as an opposition force. Today, it maintains a significant expatriate presence, primarily in Albania and Iraq, advocating for regime change and democratic reform in Iran.
