People's Chamber of the GDR

The People's Chamber of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) was the official parliament of East Germany, functioning as its legislative body from 1949 to 1990. While it was elected by citizens, its role was largely symbolic, with real power held by the ruling Socialist Unity Party. The chamber approved government decisions and laws, but its decisions rarely opposed party directives. It served to present an image of legislative process, but actual governance was centralized within the ruling party and the State Council. The People's Chamber was a key component of East Germany’s political structure during its existence.
