Penal Colony
A penal colony is a remote facility where prisoners are sent to serve their sentences outside regular prisons. Historically used by countries like Britain and France, penal colonies often isolated inmates to prevent them from returning to society easily. These colonies could be on distant islands or remote regions, and life there was typically harsh, with strict discipline and difficult living conditions. The purpose was often to punish, exile, or remove offenders from the general population, and in some cases, penal colonies also served economic or strategic roles.
