PEM (Post-Exertional Malaise)

Post-Exertional Malaise (PEM) is a worsening of symptoms following physical, mental, or emotional exertion. It often occurs hours or days after activity and can include profound fatigue, muscle weakness, sore throat, headaches, and difficulty thinking. PEM is common in conditions like ME/CFS and can significantly impact daily functioning. It’s triggered by exertion that wouldn’t typically cause problems for most people, and recovery can take days or longer. Managing PEM involves pacing activities carefully to avoid overexertion and allowing ample time for recovery after activity.
