Pegloticase
Pegloticase is a medication used to treat severe gout that doesn't respond to other treatments. It works by breaking down uric acid, a substance that forms painful crystals in joints. By lowering uric acid levels quickly, pegloticase can help reduce gout attacks and remove existing crystal deposits. It is administered through intravenous infusion, usually every two weeks, and is typically prescribed for patients with chronic gout who have high uric acid levels unmanageable by standard medicines. While effective, it may cause side effects like allergic reactions, so it's used under close medical supervision.
