Pegaptanib is a medication used to treat age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common eye condition that can cause vision loss. It works by specifically targeting and blocking a protein called VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which promotes abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye. By inhibiting VEGF, pegaptanib helps reduce fluid leakage, swelling, and the growth of unwanted blood vessels in the retina, thereby slowing or stabilizing vision loss associated with AMD. It is administered via injection directly into the eye, usually every few weeks.
