Peerage system
The peerage system is a hierarchical structure of noble titles in countries like the UK, ranking from highest to lowest as Duke, Marquess, Earl (or Count), Viscount, and Baron. These titles often originate from historical land holdings and can be inherited or granted by the monarchy. Peers may have had roles in government, military, or society, and their status historically granted privileges and influence. Today, some peers retain legislative roles, such as sitting in the House of Lords, but the system primarily symbolizes tradition and social distinction rather than political power.
