Peace of God movement
The Peace of God movement was a 10th-century Christian initiative aimed at reducing violence and warfare, especially among the common people. It encouraged believers to forsake weapons and combat, advocating for nonviolence and spiritual renewal. Led by church leaders, it sought to protect innocent lives and promote peaceful coexistence, often by excommunicating or condemning those who engaged in or supported violence. This movement reflected the church’s effort to foster moral discipline and social stability during a turbulent period in medieval Europe.
