Pathogenic Acanthamoeba
Pathogenic Acanthamoeba are tiny, free-living amoebae commonly found in water, soil, and air. While usually harmless, some strains can cause serious infections in humans, especially in the eyes, brain, and skin. The most notable disease is Acanthamoeba keratitis, an eye infection that can lead to pain and vision loss, often linked to contaminated contact lens solutions or water. In rare cases, it can cause granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, a brain infection that is often fatal. Proper hygiene and avoiding contaminated water sources are key to preventing infection by these amoebae.
