Patent Ductus Arteriosus
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a condition where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus, which normally closes soon after birth, remains open. This vessel helps fetal blood circulation but is not needed after birth. When it stays open, oxygen-rich blood from the aorta flows back into the lungs, which can cause extra work for the heart and increase lung blood flow. Depending on the size of the PDA, symptoms can range from none to breathing difficulties or heart strain. Treatment options include medication or procedures to close the duct and restore normal circulation.
